Hi Arlene,
Thanks for your question.
First, I never claimed I was a "messenger of God." What is your source for such an outlandish statement?
All I am is a seeker of truth who is willing to share my understandings with those who ask me, like you. I believe understanding other religions is a good thing regardless of ones own beliefs.
As you asked this question in the Hare Krsna section, I assume you are referring to the Maha Mantra:
hare krsna hare krsna, krsna krsna hare hare,
hare rama hare rama, rama rama hare hare. This mantra roughly paraphrases as:
Oh my God, you are so beautiful!
Oh my God, you are so powerful!
You fill the world with beauty and love,
You protect those who depend on You!
Oh my God, I call upon thee!As "Hare Krsna devotees" are members of the Gaudiya (i.e. Bengali) Vaisnava branch of Hinduism, they do not base their teachings and beliefs on the Christian Bible, so frankly I'm not sure how this really applies.
As for the Christian Bible, you are mistaken. In the Bible Jesus says:
"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking" (Matt. 6:7 KJV)
If one accepts the Vaisnava Hindu beliefs, which of course you do not but they do, the Sacred Names, Hare, Krsna and Rama, are Divine Names of God. Do you honestly believe that calling on God's Name is "vain"?
Psalm 69:30:
"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving" (KJV).
If one praises the Name of God in song, which is all a mantra really is, how is this a "vain repetition"?
Is this vain:?
"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there's just something about that Name, Master, Saviour, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain..."
Or this:
"Jesus in the morning, Jesus in the evening, Jesus when the sun goes down..."
Surely not! Even though such songs are very repetitive, there is nothing "vain" about them.
The issue here is not with the use of God's Name in song, but with your rejection of THESE Names of God.
Hare: The Holy Energy of God, sort of like the Holy Spirit.
Krsna: The Beautiful God
Rama: The Mighty God
Sound familiar?
I respect that you are a Christian, not a Hindu, but it isn't fair to condemn another religion for doing the same things you do, and Hindus have been doing this for thousands of years before Jesus was even born.
Maranatha,
