Christian Universalism A response by John of AllFaith, Dec. 2006 |
Questioner: Herman
Subject: lamb of God who takes away the sin of the worldQuestion:
could you please read and comment on this,,,Well it's about time i started this,,,i've wanted to put my beliefs down sos i could see em,,about being a believer and all,,a Christ follower,,a born again again christian,,folowers of ( the way )... John the Baptist called Jesus the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world,,,i believe he did just that...John 3:16 said that God so loved the world that he gave his only son...so i believe forgiveness was given to all by the will of God to sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ for all,,,thats grace,,,in Adam all sinned,,,Jesus payed all sins debts...his resurection brought in the age of grace,,, God dosn't seem to be judging sin today as he did in the old testiment and before Christ resurection,,,why is that???i think it is because our sin is allready been paid for...by grace... Now my views are subject to change about this,,i'm no theologian,,,just what i'm musing about the present time... No where in scripture can i remember that it linked sinlessness with righteousness ,,,the later of course is only by faith,,,Jesus also said that you must be born again to enter God's kingdom,,,A new creature,,,even a new creation if you will...born from above,a spiritual birth, adopted as sons into the family of God...PRAISE HIM FOREVER ...about this truth i'll allways believe and be thankfull... i became a christian when i believed the gospel as it was presented to me by my sunday school teacher who wasn't a theologian either,,,but i want to do the same for others ,,present a gospel of Christ cruisified buried and now alive and with God the father...He made it possible to come,,believing in Christ,,to be recieved by Him as a son..i'll resume later,,,this is great do one yourself somtime...

Hi Herman,
Thanks for sharing your musings. I'd love to add a few thoughts.
What you are describing is often referred to as universalism (i.e. universal salvation) -- (not to be confused with the denomination that bears that name). The teaching is that, exactly as you say, just as in Adam's sin all die (without doing a thing to deserve it), so too in Jesus' sacrifice all are made alive (without doing a thing to deserve it; 'not of works lest any might boast'). Otherwise, Jesus did not eliminate Adam's curse, he merely modified it.
As you well know of course, not everyone agrees with this view. Here's an example of why this is rather complicated:
You cite John 3:16, consider also John 3:17: "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
Clear right? Jesus condemns no one, the world entire is now saved. End of topic... or is it?
Here comes the dissenters: "yes, but read verse 18 as well: "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
Surely this verse disproves your idea, he/she argues. It clearly says that those who don't have Jesus are already condemned.
Here is an important point IMHO. At the point where a person stops reading is the point where doctrine is locked in. Many will refuse to go further. Practically every religion does this in one way or another.
You smile and ask "What is meant by 'condemnation'?" Since you're a nice person, you continue, "Please read the next verse (19): "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
It wasn't that they didn't "accept Jesus," it was that even in the face of his wisdom and holiness they still preferred the darkness to the light.
Next our doubting friend says, "I don't think you have that right! You are twisting the scriptures!" At this point you will probably be called names etc.... goes with the territory I'm afraid ;-)
So you reply calmly, read on: "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."
As further support, you might point out John's words at I John 4:16
"And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."
In other words, you point out, the sacrifice of Jesus was not a license to do evil, but WAS the removal of the curse. "In Adam all sinned" and so everyone was condemned under it (save the mercy of God), but now we are responsible for our own actions, good or bad.
Humans are now born without the taint of original sin because of Jesus' sacrifice. Now everyone is judged by their own actions and thoughts, as we read in Micah 6:
6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?
7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?Those who wish to be tzadikim or righteous persons, will live their lives devoted to God according to their knowledge and ability.
This is true Freedom.
This is truly Amazing grace.
