Angels and Time A response by John of AllFaith, March 2007 |
Questioner: Michael
Subject: Angels and TimeQuestion:
Multi-part question (from Christian faith perspective):
1) Why did God create angels?
2) Believing that "time" in eternity past had no relation to what we have been given as "time", when were angels created? (and subsequently why one moment as opposed to an earlier or later moment?)
3) Your opinion, how many angels were created? Thanks for your view/input.
John of AllFaith's reply
Hi Michael,
The word angel means messenger. God created them as personal servants to do His bidding. Biblically speaking, all angels are male, like Gabriel, Michael, and so on. Most are unnamed (in the Scriptures), but they are powerful beings. There are also the Cherubim, Seraphim and other heavenly beings as well angels.
2. I don't think there is an answer to this one from a Christian perspective. God is eternal past, present and future. We know the angels were created before the earth and the humans.
But that's about all one can say. At some "point" God created the heavens and earth. I don't think there is a more specific answer biblically speaking. Why this was done, biblically speaking, is a mystery. The standard answer is that God created being to worship and praise Him, but that doesn't really make sense in my opinion. Why would God need worship and praise? I think the best guess is that God is Love and Love, by its nature, wants to be given to others.
3. No way of knowing this for sure. A legion is 3,000 to 6,000 infantry troops. Jesus said:
Matt. 26:53: "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he will presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?"
So there are at least 36,000 to 72,000 of them. I would assume there are as many as God wants ;-)
