"...But what if one is already a Christian?" A response by John of AllFaith, August 2006 |
Name: B
I have a question about homosexuals. The Bible says homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God. However, what if you have been saved and already have Jesus in your heart?
Question: I have a question about homosexuals,Second, speaking from personal experience, the gay lifestyle is not something self picked. I did not wake up one morning and say to myself, "I'm going to be attracted to other males!" I am not attracted to females and as much as I wish I could, it isn't happening. Why would God send me to hell over something I cannot control?
A lot of people argue being gay is something you can control.. but they have no clue! Just like they did not pick to be straight, naturally they were attracted to the opposite sex.
And then how would a homosexual go about converting straight? I love God with all my heart and want to please Him! But if I were to be in a relationship with a female it would be a sin too because it would not be real.. Due to not being attracted to her.
Thanks!

Hi B,
God loves you, just as you are!
Thanks for writing. As you know, society remains very homophobic and this cultural prejudice was carried into the Church. Not surprisingly, when people who dislike homosexuality read the Bible, they find support for their views. Back when slavery was legal, many Christians believed they could prove slavery was biblically mandated. It wasn't and neither is biblically observant homosexuality.
In truth, the Bible nowhere condemns committed same gender marriage. It does forbid pre-marital and extra-marital sex, regardless of one's sexual orientation however.
Of course, gay men seldom limit themselves to marriage, indeed, in most countries its not even an option. This makes it even more difficult for gay men than for heterosexual men, because women tend to refuse sexual advances more often than men do. For gay Christian males therefore obeying this biblical command (i.e. of no sex outside of marriage) is very difficult to observe. Violating this biblical command is no more or less serious for gay men than it is for straight men. Also remember the command to 'not be unevenly yoked with un-Believers'. There are a LOT of gay Christian men. How the various principles are applied to one's life of course is a personal matter.
Many enlightened Christian ministers will and do perform what are usually called "Holy Unions." While these are not legally recognized marriages, they do fulfill the biblical requirements of marriage and make the union holy.
I agree with you 100% that people don't pick their sexual orientation. It is a gift of God, part of our natural make-up.
I have a website dedicated to explaining what the Bible actually teaches on this subject that you might be interested in, http://allfaith.com/Grace. I also own two e-lists for GLBT Christians that you're more than welcome to join.
The largest gay org on earth is the Christian denomination, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches: http://www.ufmcc.com Their churches range from very liberal to very conservative based on the local congregations. They have congregations worldwide. Their website has lots of good info.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask,
God bless,
