Hi Lela,There are certain points of doctrine that well meaning Christians disagree on. This is one of them.
Personally, I believe the Bible teaches what is known as the Doctrine of Eternal Security. This doctrine states that when a person is "saved" he/she is "adopted" into the Family of God, all sins are forgiven and one is eternally saved. There are several verses that support this view. I wont present the argument in detail here, but let me know if you are interested and I'll write something up for you.
Other equally sincere and knowledgeable Christians teach that if one leaves the Faith through bad association, sinful activities etc, one will lose his/her salvation. There are also verses that tend to support this view as well.
Not to confuse you, but other Christians, known as Calvinists, believe that God decided before creating the world who would be saved and who would be lost and that our actions have nothing to do with our eternal condition.
I will say that not everyone who says they are saved are saved. Those who really have been however, are eternally saved in my understanding of what the Bible literally teaches, and God is fully capable of bestowing grace up all whom He chooses.
No matter which view is correct, "bad associations spoil good habits," "Do not be unevenly yoked with unbelievers," etc. Those who overly associate with unbelievers tend to adopt the ways of unbelievers. Those who wish to love God tend to associate with others who love God. If one does not have such a desire, it might be good to re-evaluate one's relationship with God.
Hope this helps,
~Pastor John
