Question: Please explain the difference in the beliefs in the Trinity
Subject: Holiness vs Oneness vs Pentecostal
John of AllFaith's Answer:
First Pentecostals: (Note that the other two groups you cite are normally considered Pentecostals as well).
Hi,The majority of traditional Pentecostals accept the standard Trinity doctrine as formulated in the various historic creeds of the Church: Nicea, Apostles, Westminster, etc. That being, there is One God who is eternally known in the co-existent, co-eternal Persons of Father, Son and Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost). In other words, the Holy Trinity of the One God.
Oneness Pentecostals (United Pentecostal Church etc.): This group believes in One eternal God. They reject the Trinity doctrine as a form of polytheism and hence idolatry, often pointing to its similarities with Roman Paganism. Unlike other Christians, they see the Incarnation of Jesus as the full Incarnation of the One True God. Jesus being both the Father and the Holy Spirit (or more accurately, the Holy Spirit being the Spirit of Jesus and the Father being the partial revelation of Jesus to the Jews).
"Holiness" is not quite as clear. "Holiness Pentecostals" sometimes accept the Trinity doctrine, but usually hold to the Oneness doctrine. The term is used by different Christians in different ways in different areas.
Essentially, a "Holiness Christian," of whatever denomination, rejects all manner of "worldliness" and seeks to practice what some would consider "extreme devotion" or "extreme fundamentalism" or holiness in all things. Usually rejecting such things as make-up, divorce and remarriage, dancing, alcohol, etc.
Hope this helps,
May God bless,~John of AllFaith
