Questioner: Jessica
Subject: Hmm....Question:
I see that you're a christian huh...
Now, is it through that sexual orientations can be changed?
Christians, don't forget that some sexual orientations can't be chosen. Sometimes it ain't a choice. And when it isn't our choice, it's God's choice. Releasing of hormones. What do you think, pal?
I requested this person to re-submit their question:
Clarification
Question: I'M ASKING YOU IF A PERSON'S SEXUAL ORIENTATION COULD BE CHANGED?
John of AllFaith's reply
Hi Jessica,
The reason I asked for the clarification is that it sounded more like you were venting that asking a serious question. I'm always happy to answer serious questions.
I do not believe that sexual orientation can be changed, other than by an act of God.
It is important to understand that sexual orientation is not always the issue as to why people practice a homosexual lifestyle. Most psychologists and sociologists will tell you that people embrace a homosexual lifestyle for many different reasons. Sexual Orientation is only one possible reason.
Think of sexual orientation as a scale. On one end are people who are 100 homosexual from conception onward. These people have a natural homosexual orientation that can only be changed by an act of God. I have ministered in this community for many years and I have never seen this happen. Not once.
On the other end of the scale are people who are 100 heterosexual from conception onward. These people have a natural heterosexual orientation that can only be changed by an act of God. In all my years I have never seen a heterosexual "turn gay."
The vast majority of people fall somewhere in between, the majority of people being on the heterosexual end of the scale.
Now, sometimes it happens that a boy or girl, usually younger than their late teens, will suffer sexual abuse or some related trauma from an adult in their lives, sometimes a parent, family friend, priest etc. When this happens, these children will sometimes adopt a homosexual lifestyle as either a defense mechanism or from a state of denial over what they have experienced. These people usually come to terms with what has happened to them and later return to their natural heterosexual orientation, but not always. Sometimes this is done with the help of a therapist, a minister or on their own.
Some people who are not clearly on either end of the scale make a conscious choice to live one lifestyle or the other. Many of these people consider themselves to be bisexual.
Those who consciously choose their sexual lifestyle have the ability and natural desire to practice either, it usually depends on who they are attracted to at the time and what becomes of that attraction. Those who adopt a homosexual lifestyle due to some tragedy can overcome their abuse and return to their natural orientation. Those who are really, by their natural sexual orientation, homosexual, will always be gay, even if forced to "conform" by law or social pressures.
The Good News is that God accepts "whosoever calls on His Name.'
As for the biblical implications of homosexuality, if you are interested in this feel free to write again.
May God shed His Light of Truth upon us all,
John of AllFaith
Hope this helps
