A Question About Evaluating Christian Growth A response by John of AllFaith, August 2006) |
Name: Dawn
Question: I would like to know the best possible way to evaluate or measure the growth of a Christian. I am a new Youth Director and have 10 children in the ages of eleven to seventeen. I realize all of their walks will be different as they are all in a different place in their walk. What type of criteria should I use to measure or evaluate their growth to determine if my programs are valid and successful?
Subject: evaluation of Christian growth
Answer: Hi Dawn,
First, you must remember that it is impossible to know another person's relationship with God.I think the best guide for you will by 'By their fruit you will know them'. As you rightly say, each will manifest the Faith differently, depending on their family life, life experiences, school, relationship and peer presures, etc. Get to know each youth, pray for and with them, and listen to your inner voice. I'd also encourage the kids to speak openly with you, assure them that they can tell you anything, even about their sins etc., in complete confidentiality. Ask them about your programs and get their feed back on what you are trying. Kids are used to adults not really listening to them. It will be helpful if you are one of those adults they can speak with openly who will listen to them without judging them (even if you need to offer constructive criticism etc.).
Hope this helps,
