Sins of the Fathers A response by John of AllFaith, January, 2007 |

Subject: punishment for sinsQuestion:
Is there a passage in the Bible about someone being punished for the actions of a family member. Let me explain, lets say, hypothetically, that I have a friend who has a problem with drinking and he was arrested for drunk driving, he crashed his car into oncoming traffic hurting three people, none that seriously fortunately. This friends grandfather ( who was also an alcoholic) paid for a very expensive lawyer to help him beat the case on a technicality and didn't receive any type of punishment, not even a suspended license. Then, within the next week the person who means the most to both of them in the whole world was diagnosed with breast cancer. I think it was caught in an early stage and is treatable with a high recovery rate. I have referred to this as Biblical justice, I don't know if this is a correct term, but is there a passage in the bible that deals with this type of situation. Thank you very much
Jimmy
John of AllFaith's reply
Hi,Despite certain traditions concerning children sharing in the sins of their fathers, there is no biblical teaching that would fit the situation you describe. There might be a feeling of "poetic justice," but with the exception of the sin of Adam, people do not pay for the sins of others.
